The Omron CPM2A-40CDT1-D is a 40-point I/O programmable logic controller (PLC) with DC power, transistor (source) output, 24 inputs, and 16 outputs. In PLC ladder diagrams, programming elements such as input relays, output relays, and auxiliary relays are software-based components, not physical hardware relays. Each corresponds to a memory cell in the PLC’s image register. For example, auxiliary relay M0 is OFF (0 state) when its memory cell is 0, causing its normally open contact to be open and normally closed contact closed. When the memory cell is 1, M0 is ON (1 state), its normally open contact closes, and its normally closed contact opens.

The Omron CPM2A-40CDT1-D is a compact programmable logic controller (PLC) with a 40-point input/output configuration. It operates on a DC power supply and features a transistor (source-type) output. The unit includes 24 input points and 16 output points, making it suitable for mid-range automation tasks requiring discrete control.

In PLC ladder logic programming, certain elements are named after relays—such as input relays, output relays, and auxiliary relays—but these are not physical (hardware) relays. Instead, they are software-based programming elements that correspond directly to specific memory cells within the PLC’s memory, specifically the image registers of the components.

Each programming element is associated with a bit in the PLC’s memory. For example, consider auxiliary relay M0. If the memory bit corresponding to M0 is in the 0 state, the coil of M0 in the ladder diagram is de-energized. In this state, the normally open contact of M0 is open (non-conductive), and the normally closed contact of M0 is closed (conductive). This condition is described as M0 being in the 0 state, or M0 being OFF.

Conversely, if the memory bit for M0 is in the 1 state, the coil of M0 is energized. Under this condition, the normally open contact of M0 closes (becomes conductive), and the normally closed contact of M0 opens (becomes non-conductive). This condition is referred to as M0 being in the 1 state, or M0 being ON.

Thus, the state of each programming element in the ladder diagram is entirely determined by the binary state of its corresponding memory bit in the PLC’s internal memory, not by any physical relay action. This software-based approach allows for flexible, reliable, and repeatable control logic without the wear and space requirements of hardware relays.
